How to reconstitute a peptide
Most peptides ship as a freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder that you mix with bacteriostatic water before the first injection. Here's the procedure, the ratios that matter, and how to turn your prescribed dose into syringe units.
What you'll need
On the table before you start
- Your peptide vial (lyophilized powder)
- Bacteriostatic water (not sterile water — the benzyl alcohol keeps a multi-dose vial usable for weeks)
- A reconstitution syringe (often 1–3 mL) and an insulin syringe for dosing
- Alcohol swabs and a clean, flat surface
Step by step
- Let everything reach room temperature. Cold vials and cold water draw poorly and can shock the peptide.
- Swab both stoppers. Wipe the rubber top of the peptide vial and the water vial with alcohol and let them dry.
- Draw your bacteriostatic water. Pull the volume your protocol calls for into the reconstitution syringe.
- Add it slowly, down the glass wall. Angle the needle so the water runs down the side of the vial rather than landing directly on the powder. This protects the peptide’s structure.
- Don't shake — swirl. Roll or gently swirl the vial until the powder dissolves. Shaking can denature peptides. A little patience beats foam.
- Inspect. The solution should be clear. Discard it if it’s cloudy, discolored, or has particulate.
- Refrigerate. Once mixed, most peptides live in the fridge (2–8 °C) and are used within the window your pharmacy specifies — commonly 14–30 days.
The ratio that matters
There's no single "correct" amount of water — it sets the concentration, which sets how many syringe units a dose becomes. More water = more dilute = larger, easier-to-measure draws. Less water = more concentrated = tiny draws. The goal is a dose that lands in a comfortable, readable range on your insulin syringe.

Storage & handling
- Keep reconstituted peptides refrigerated and out of light.
- Never freeze a reconstituted vial unless your pharmacy explicitly says to.
- Label the vial with the mix date so you don't outrun its stability window.
- One vial, one person, one clean needle per injection.
